Saint David: the martyrdom continues

Well, now disgraced Aussie Secret star David Schirmer has yet another name to add to the growing list of folks to blame for his troubles. So far he's blamed:

  1. a jilted ex-lover/employee
  2. depraved Aussie journalists
  3. Satan
To that list he can now add his former right-hand man, Warren Henningsen. Warren, who last year faced one of those marauding journos when Schirmer hid from her in a public restroom after she asked him some uncomfortable questions, apparently had high hopes when he went to work for David Schirmer. Warren says that when he first saw The Secret, he knew he'd found his calling: he felt he was meant to spread the joyful message about the Law Of Attraction. So he joined Schirmer's team and thought he was on his way to a career doing just that.

Foolish? Idealistic? Maybe. But that's not the point here. Warren, who is now trying to make a living as a life coach, says that David Schirmer was the closest connection to The Secret that there was in Warren's native Australia. He became Schirmer's spin doctor, a job that grew ever more difficult as rumors about his employer took on a life of their own. As time went by Warren kept seeing more red flags, but tried to ignore them.

Finally he couldn't ignore them anymore, and he eventually got so fed up he quit Schirmer's employ. Schirmer, however, is apparently spinning their separation in a different way, claiming to have fired Warren for various misdeeds. But who ya gonna believe? I'm more inclined to believe Warren.

Recently Warren spoke to A Current Affair reporter Ben Fordham. Here's the YouTube link to Part 6 of ACA's David Schirmer exposé. For the record, ACA tried to talk to Schirmer to get his side of the story, but Schirmer refused to talk to them.

Meanwhile, Schirmer is still thumping that Bible of his. Someone intercepted this recent communication on a chat forum:
David Schirmer said...
I have been on the receiving end of...bullying tactics of gutter journalists and self-promotion egomainiacs [sic]. People like [he named two Aussie journos] are the scum of the earth and have no moral values beyond their own egos. They never do real research, they find a person that they think they can destory [sic] then create lie after lie to build their case, hidding [sic] behind the walls of solicitors [lawyers] and TV cameras. For all those people who have been attacked by these scum, stand tall in the truth, they will be brought to judgement eventually. "Greater is He who is in me (God) than he who is in the world (satan)."
Amen, Brother David...oops, I mean, Saint David. Sorry. (And no, I have no concrete proof that David Schirmer wrote that comment, but it is his style of writing, not to mention his creative spelling.)

So what's next for David Schirmer? Well, he still has quite a few significant legal issues and court cases in Australia that have yet to be resolved. But he has recently sold his home for $1.8 million (Australian dollars, which amount to a little over $1.4 million US), and there's a lot of speculation that he is making plans to move to the US in an effort to start over. He seems to have an ally Stateside – and no, I'm not talking about Joe Vitale, who was recently featured in Schirmer's Succeed Magazine. (Word has it that numerous other Secret stars no longer have anything to do with Schirmer and have been warning others to stay away from him too. Apparently Joe didn't get the memo in time to back out of the Succeed deal, but he should be fully aware by now.)

No, Schirmer's apparent ally is a minor asteroid in the Hustledork Solar System, Keith Leon, whom I've mentioned here a few times before. Keith claims to be a Relationship Master, and he recently published a book about finding your life purpose, Who Do You Think You Are? The book featured Schirmer, among many other New-Wage hustledorks (the Foreword was written by Jack "Chicken Soup" Canfield). If you look on the Events list on Keith's web site, you'll see that he's holding no less than eight events in November, three in December and even one in January 2009, starring himself and David Schirmer. Though no specific date is given for the January event, here's the blurb:

JANUARY 2009

"UNLOCKING The Secret to Success: Prosperity, Connection & Relationships"

David Schirmer, Keith Leon, Joe Vitale and another Secret Teacher TBA will speak at this powerful three day event. You do not want to miss it.

Los Angeles, CA

Pssst, Joe... You did say on your blog that you didn't know about the Schirmer connection with Succeed Magazine before it was too late. Well, it's not too late to back out of this one. If you've already done so, you'd better tell Keith to remove your name from his site.

You're welcome.

Judging by remarks on some other blogs I've seen, I know that some people are pretty bored with this whole Schirmer saga. But I also know that quite a few people claim to have been wronged by Schirmer and are waiting for justice through the courts.

Some of you may think I'm belaboring a point or beating a dead horse. Maybe so, but here's my thinking (and I know I've said this before, but it needs to be said again): If Schirmer has done even half of the things he's accused of, do we really want him here in the US?

And there's an even larger point, which I've also made here, but feel obligated to make yet again: Schirmer may be the one who got caught, but he's far from the only smarmy player on the New-Wage stage. He's merely an extreme symptom of what is wrong with the entire selfish-help industry.

Journey to Fantasyland?

David Schirmer, Aussie star of The Secret, is back home in Australia after what he describes as "a short but intensive visit to Orlando and Los Angeles." I had known he was in Orlando for a meeting with marketing greats Dan Kennedy and Bill Glazer, but to my knowledge he hadn’t previously said anything about L.A. Some are wondering what he was doing on the Left Coast. My best guess is that perhaps he visited Disney World in Orlando, and was inspired to see the original Disneyland in the L.A. area (specifically, in Anaheim). Perhaps he wanted to pick up some astounding wealth and success tips from Mickey or Goofy, and cop a feel off of Snow White while he was at it. (Okay, that was a low blow even for me. My apologies to everyone.) But as I said, the Disney Theory is just a guess. I could be wrong, and probably am.

What is clear is that these days, Schirmer is still sharing wealth and success tips and stock trading advice via various web sites and blogs. For example, he teaches "the mind habits and money habits to achieve success" on his "7 Steps To Unlimited Wealth" site ("The time proven secrets that your teachers and parents didn't know or never taught you ... but should have!"). And any day now we should see the newest edition of his Indices Report on his Stock Market Index Report blog, which, incidentally, still proudly bears the Schirmer/Secret logo. Schirmer’s sig file for most of his promotional emails these days lists him as "David Schirmer, Private Trader/Financial Coach/The 'Aussie' Secret Teacher."

Notwithstanding the mounds of criticism Schirmer has faced, he still has his fans and defenders. For example, there is one member of The Gaia Community, an online gathering of the conspicuously enlightened. The tag line on the home page of The Gaia Community says it all: "Do you ever feel that everyone around you is asleep? Are you tired of waking up alone?" Hmmm….kind of sounds like a dating site, come to think of it. Anyway, there is one Gaia man who seems to be a true David Schirmer fan: Keith Leon of L.A., who describes himself as a Relationship Master (he and his lovely wife Maura have been featured on The Huffington Post). Here's what he says about his work:

My wife and I have a goal to become the inspirational couple of the century…so everything we do, every product we make, every business decision must be in alignment with this purpose, or we don't do it.

In the past…when people would ask us what we do for a living…we'd go into a big long detailed explination [sic] that would tend to take to [sic] long…and put people to sleep. If you asked us now, here's what we'd tell you.

Have you ever known anyone who stayed in an un-fulfilling relationship because they didn't want to be alone?

If I told you that my wife and I could take anyone and show then [sic] how to get exactly what they want in all of their relationships…do you know anyone who might benefit from that?

So where’s the Schirmer connection? Keep your shirt on; I’m coming to that. Keith Leon is listed on the Gaia site as co-author of a book called, Who Do You Think You Are? Discover The Purpose Of Your Life, which has a foreword by Jack "Chicken Soup" Canfield. As much as anything else, the book seems to be a tribute to the "teachers" in The Secret:

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? Discover The Purpose Of Your Life! will take you on the personal life journeys of inspirational, self growth leaders Jack Canfield, John Assaraf, Dr. Joe Vitale, Dr. John Gray, Hale Dwoskin, David Schirmer, Bob Proctor as well as many other successful entrepreneurs, entertainers, educators and healers.

In all, 63 New-Wage luminaries are featured in the book. I couldn’t find a listing on Amazon at this time, but it is apparently for sale directly from Keith and Maura. And you can also get Who Do You Think You Are? as an e-book.

On his Gaia Community profile, Keith Leon lists his heroes, and the top three are: "My friend and mentor Jack Canfield, David Schirmer, and Rev. Dr. Michael Beckwith.

My correspondent who brought this to my attention thought that perhaps Schirmer might have been in LA to visit Keith Leon. I still prefer the Disney Theory, but I admit that the Leon Connection is possible too. Anyway, my correspondent expressed the opinion that perhaps Keith might be well advised to do better research on the folks he interviews, writes about, and chooses as his personal heroes.

Today I received a rare comment – rare for this blog, anyway – from yet another Schirmer supporter. Actually this was a comment to one of my November 2007 posts. But I’m bringing it up here, since the November post is now in the archives. The remark came from Adrian Sherlock, an actor and independent film maker in Australia, and creator of super hero Damon Dark. Adrian, under the name straker2, has also come out in support of Schirmer on YouTube. Here's what he wrote to me:

My opinion of the Secret is that it is a very useful tool which I've applied in my own life to positive effect. My view of David Schirmer is that he seems to be a genuine sort of guy, if he's made any mistakes in the past, I get the impression he's learnt from them and is unlikely to repeat them.

David is, I believe the owner of the Aust branch of Bob Proctor's Life Success business. Mr. Proctor's teachings helped me out a helluva lot when I was a young man with a lot of problems. I've seen David Schirmer live and he teaches the material Bob Proctor teaches, so it's well worth the money to hear it. I know a lot of people are suspicious, cynical or distrustful of these type of teachers, and that may be understandable enough, but something you reject can't help you. And for me, that's the bottom line. I went to YouTube to find an audience for my film making, but I'm happy to support David Schirmer, I believe he's a decent guy.

While I am always happy to publish comments from "the other side," I had to point out to Adrian that even Bob Proctor (aka "Scientist Bob" on this blog) seems to have dissociated himself from David Schirmer. And while it is often true that, as Adrian wrote, "something you reject can’t help you," it’s also true that people are hurt all the time by blindly accepting the words and ideas of some selfish-help and New-Wage gurus. In fact, rejecting the ideas of some of these people is, in some cases, the most helpful thing a person can do for herself or himself.

As for Adrian Sherlock's impassioned defenses of David Schirmer on YouTube: it may seem a pretty big stretch to portray Schirmer as a hero who is being pummeled by the envious and the mediocre, but then again, Adrian's genre of choice is science fiction.

PS ~ Speaking of books about one's life purpose, Oprah has described herself as "over the moon excited" about her latest book club pick, A New Earth, Awakening To Your Life's Purpose, by Eckhart Tolle. She said that by sharing this book, which she describes as her "boldest choice yet," she is helping fulfill her life's mission: "to lead people to their higher selves." Uh-huh, the way she did with last year's endorsement of The Secret. Go get 'em, Queen O. And if her man Obama gets into office, perhaps we can expect New-Wage culture to be elevated to even higher levels of regard. Dave Barry for President is looking better all the time...

The case of the disappearing post

It's another Cosmic Connie Mystery! Some of you may have noticed a post about Australian Secret star David Schirmer that appeared briefly on my blog last night (or earlier today, for those in other parts of the world), but is now gone. Rest assured there's nothing untoward going on; I have temporarily taken the post down pending further...shall we say..."research." This was entirely of my own accord – a decision to err on the side of discretion for the time being – and was not the result of any sort of threat.

I have every reason to believe that everything I wrote or suggested about Schirmer on that post is true. I also have good reason to believe that even if I never write another word about him, the truth will come out. Even if I had never written a word about him at all, the truth would have come out. It was well on its way out before I had ever even heard of Schirmer; in fact it was the initial exposé by the Aussie TV show A Current Affair that brought him onto my radar in the first place.

I do wish to apologize to anyone who may be disappointed about my taking the post down – particularly those who feel they have been harmed by Schirmer. I'm not backing down on my stance about Schirmer or The Secret, and I may very well republish the post very soon, or, alternatively, I may publish something very much like it, or something even better (or worse, depending upon your perspective). Believe me, I have a lot of information that I have not yet shared.

Meanwhile, I continue to welcome opinions from all sides, including from David Schirmer himself. I am not a journalist and this blog is not journalism, but I do make every attempt to be fair and accurate, if not exactly impartial.

That said, I don't want to leave you without a couple of comments that were sent to me before I took the post down. These were intended for that post but since it's no longer up, I can't publish the comments the normal way. So I'll do it here. The first one is from the ever-delightful and witty
Steven Sashen:
I've been compiling examples to support a theory of mine:

Listen to the self-referential jokes made by the personal development "gurus". They may get laughs, but they are revealing the truth.

So, when someone jokes about his wife only being with him for the money... guess what?

Similarly when one of these schmurus (as in "guru, schmuru") gets righteously indignant about any accusation, I would take the bet that the charge is true.

And if, instead of indignant, they pull off condescending and smug, double your wager.

Put all that together and it looks like the best way to make money off of Schirmer is to find a way to short-sell him.
A guy named Julian (who provided no link) made this comment:
Cosmic Connie, This is a very long and interesting blog. I have never liked David Schirmer from the first moment I saw him on The Secret. He gave off an air of smarminess which did not gel with the rest of The Secret content.

I have also heard that Bob Proctor is no longer associating with Schirmer and I think Bob should also force Schirmer to remove every video of them working together because Schirmer has dirtied the whole production in my view.

David Schirmer is a very sleazy man if even a portion of what [has been said about him] is true. I never did like him, never did trust him and never will and I also know many other people who feel the same way that I do.

Merry Christmas to you and yours and keep up the wonderful work on this blog. There should be many more people who investigate and report on these conmen. Thankyou
Thank you to Steven and to Julian, and happy holidays to you two, and to everyone else reading this. And for everyone's sake, let's just hope that David Schirmer keeps the promise he made on A Current Affair to pay back his investors by Christmas Day. That would be a great present for all involved – including and especially Schirmer himself.

PS added on 24 December ~
Numerous other sites and blogs on the Web are devoted to David Schirmer, including this one, called David Schirmer Exposed. Ironically, I found the link to that blog on Schirmer's own blog. When the only reverse links to be found on a blog are those slamming the blogger in question, that should tell you something.

Anyway, for the benefit of those who didn't catch my "disappearing" post, its main inspiration was a recent blog post of Schirmer's, in which he discussed a nude-photo scandal (not his own, fortunately). He used that post to moralize about the evils of revenge. In the interests of creating yet another useful reverse link on his blog, here's the link to Schirmer's post.

And here is another delicious bit of irony (and yet another back-link for Schirmer's blog): A February 2007 post in which Schirmer writes of an elderly couple who wrote to him because they'd apparently lost all of their money on other people's investment scams. They were overcome with disillusionment and despair as a result. And yet they were also newly hopeful, because they'd just viewed The Secret. "Mr. Schirmer," they pleaded, "can you restore our faith in getting back what has been stolen from us?" (I can hear a few of you out there gasping and sputtering right about now...)

Schirmer does his best to restore that shattered faith. In his reply to the couple he begins by stating, "There are so many scans [sic] out there it is hard for the average person to determine what is the truth." I think you'll agree that his next piece of advice seems strangely self-serving:
Firstly, you must let go of all resentment of whatever money you have lost. Resentment and Guilt are two of the biggest emotions that hold people back for getting what they truly desire. Easy to say, often not so easy to do! While ever we focus on what we haven't got or what was 'stolen' from us we cannot receive the abundance the universe has in store for us. Do not any longer think of or speak about your loss. Remove anything that reminds you of the experience.
He wraps it up with a short reading list that includes a book by Bob Proctor, and then he ends on this note: "DO NOT do any courses or seminar with anyone unless it follows the principles of The Secret and the above mentioned books."

Somehow I get the feeling – call it intuition, call it a strange hunch or a wild hair – that this couple ended up signing on for a Schirmer seminar, and that they did not become wealthy and happy as a result...

Nothing SUCCEEDs like success!

"I am one of the most successful stock and commodity traders in the world and one of the most brilliant minds on the Law Of Attraction. The reason I am a great teacher of the laws of the universe is due to my ability to explain a complex subject in the simplest way possible."

~ David Schirmer in Keith Leon’s book, Who Do You Think You Are? Discover The Purpose Of Your Life

You just can’t keep a good huckster man down. For the last year or so, a few little things have not been going so well for David Scammer Schirmer, the lone Aussie star of the hit New-Wage moviemercial The Secret. First there was that annoying little exposé on the Australian TV show A Current Affair. (Actually, it’s a continuing series of exposés – five so far; here’s a link to the latest one.)

Then there was the matter of the divorce between Schirmer and one of his idols (and former joint-venture partner), Bob Proctor. Proctor sued Schirmer in Australia’s Federal Court for deceitful practices, among other things, and doesn’t want anything to do with him ever again. Recently Schirmer found himself in Federal Court yet again regarding an intellectual property charge (JLF Corporation Pty Ltd v Schirmer Financial Management Pty Ltd, VID222/2008). An Aussie businessman named John Fitzgerald,* who seems to be authentically successful (well, rich, anyway) as well as genuinely altruistic (or conspicuously altruistic, anyway), has taken Schirmer to court for breach of intellectual property in regard to (or so I understand) Fitzgerald’s 7 Steps To Accelerated Wealth and Schirmer’s 7 Steps to Unlimited Wealth. While of course no one has a copyright on the admittedly overused concept of "7 steps" (or 3, 10, 12 steps/secrets/tips, etc.), it seems there are some uncanny similarities between Fitzgerald’s work and Schirmer’s – enough to justify a court case, apparently. The date of the hearing is May 2; beyond that, I know very little about the details, though I am sure they will be sorted out in court.

Despite all of this – the lies, the negativity, the false accusations against this good man, and oh, those pesky court cases – David Schirmer continues to be the Law Of Attraction In Action, as the quotation above indicates. He’s not just sitting around feeling sorry for himself and wondering what happened to that $250,000.00 dining room table he bragged about to the crew from A Current Affair last year. (Rumor has it that the guy who made the table doesn’t want anything to do with Schirmer these days. But that’s just gossip, and you know I don’t deal in that sort of stuff. Oh, wait. Yes, I do.)

ANYWAY, David Schirmer isn’t just sitting around admiring his ill-gained flashy BMW and spending other people’s money. No, he’s continuing to exercise his brilliant Law Of Attraction mind with such projects as his new publishing venture, Succeed Magazine, which regularly features great and inspiring people who have made it big in the New-Wage world. And even though his heart may have been broken when Scientist Bob cruelly threw him out into the cold, it seems that Schirmer is now finding solace by cozying up to another one of his "friends," Joe "Mr. Fire" Vitale.

Not only did Mr. Fire mention on his own blog that he had made the cover (well, sort of) of Succeed, Schirmer himself devoted not one but two blog posts to the new alliance. On his post of 23 April, titled "Opps [sic]! I’d better write another blog!", Schirmer writes:

At 7:30am the editor of our Succeed Magazine phoned Texas, USA. It was a special call to an amazing man, friend and co-presenter on The Secret, Dr Joe Vitale. I enjoyed immensely sitting in and listening to Joe's story.

Over the coming months we are sharing with our readers the story behind The Secret Teachers ... the real stuff of where they started and the key distinctions they learned on the journey that brought them to where they are today.

Joe's story is amazing - from homeless and poverty stricken to an international author, speaker and world acclaimed marketer. While on the call Joe shared something with us that he is doing which will make the world a better place - and Succeed will get to announce it exclusively in the next issue.

Not meaning to steal your thunder, Succeed, but would this thing Joe is doing to make the world a better place have anything to do with putting an end to homelessness in our lifetime? Yeah, I thought as much. You can read about that on Joe's blog for free now, though he'll hit you up for an Amazon gift certificate. I'm sure his Operation YES! will be every bit as effective at ending homelessness as The Hunger Project, co-founded by est founder Werner Erhard back in the late 1970s, was at ending world hunger. Whatever. Anyhoo, Schirmer followed up the next day with a post that supplied a link to a PDF of the Vitale article. He ended with a rather puzzling solicitation for subscribers:

Help us out by subscribing ... currently the magazine is only $69.70 for 12 issues (plus international postage). The June/July issue will be bigger and better and will be $99.70 for 12 issues.

So…are we to infer that each issue is actually 12 issues? I’m a little confused, I must confess. But anyway, Succeed Magazine sounds like a real bargain to me.

Word on the (cyber)street is that Schirmer put some of his own money into this venture (do I even need to add, "rather than using that money to pay back some of the people to whom he owes so much"?). Succeed has apparently been through a number of owners, but at one point was a joint venture between Schirmer and a guy named Michael Walls. Walls got royally pissed off at the Schirmers about something or other…goodness, I can’t imagine what; the man must just have a bad temper…and he resigned his co-directorship, so now it’s David and Lorna’s baby. Not that you’d really be able to discern that just by going to the Succeed Magazine web site…but Schirmer does list it on his Linkedin page.

By the way, I got a kick out of the disclaimer on Succeed’s About Us page. It’s another example of why you can’t successfully sue a New-Wage b.s.’er for b.s.’ing you, no matter how outrageous the b.s. is:

disclaimer

"No person or party should rely in any way or act upon any part or parts of the contents of this publication without first obtaining advice from a fully qualified professional person. This publication is sold or otherwise disseminated on the clear terms and conditions that:

* The consultants, authors, contributors, editors and other associated parties are not responsible for the results of any actions taken on the basis of information in this publication, or for any error in or omission therefrom; and

* The publisher is not engaged in rendering financial, accounting, professional, legal or any other advice or services of a professional nature. The publisher, consultants, editors, contributors, authors and other associated parties expressly disclaim any and all liability and responsibility to every person or party, whether a purchaser, reader or consumer of this publication or not, in respect of anything and of the consequences of anything, done or omitted to be done by any such person or party and being in reliance whether wholly or partially upon any part or parts or the whole of the contents of this publication. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, no publisher, consultant, editor, contributor, author or other associated party shall have any responsibility for any act or omission of any other consultant, editor, contributor, author or other associated party."

On the one hand, that's pretty much a standard disclaimer, perhaps necessary in today's sue-happy bidness climate. On the other hand...well, that disclaimer pretty much covers everything and everyone even remotely connected to Succeed, doesn’t it? It does raise one big question: If you need a "fully qualified professional person" of some kind in order to act upon any of the hustledorks’ advice in the pages of Succeed, why not just go to the professional(s) of choice in the first place, and save yourself the subscription costs? At the very least, you can be reasonably certain that the professionals will probably still be in operation next week or next month, should you need their services again, whereas given the Schirmers’ track record, I’m not so sure that the same can be guaranteed for Succeed.

Schirmer has many other irons in the fire these days, and is also dabbling in social networking, which is all the rage now. I'd be part of the trend myself if I could ever figure it out. [Memo to all of the people who have invited me to be one of your Linkedin buds: I'll get to you, I promise. I'm not being rude. I just have to figure out how to actually use Linkedin.] At any rate, Schirmer recently sent out a spam email inviting people to be his "friend" on Facebook:

Hi:

Are you using Facebook?…

… Facebook has recently been surging in growth and once you mess around with it for a few minutes you'll quickly realize WHY...

…It really is a unique communications tool – and the marketing uses are still in their infancy. Yet there are tons of ways to communicate, learn and even grow your business TODAY with it.

I've been using Facebook for over a year. I actually didn't see much of a reason to use it for my own business.

And, to be honest, I didn't want to tell people my personal account because I value my PRIVACY and was afraid I would get too many people hounding me with messages, and getting mad if I didn't reply, etc. etc.

But Facebook has really evolved in the past year and has added some great privacy features as well as other options to control your account.

…So I've decided to go ahead and share my facebook account – it allows me to share personal photos and videos as well as business-related ones with the "friends" linked to my account.

If you have a Facebook account please put in a request to add me as a friend (when you're logged in) by visiting: http://profile.to/davidschirmer/

Sign up and play around with it a little bit. You'll quickly start seeing how powerful it is.

I'll be publishing more information in the near future that you will find educational and helpful in applying The Secret in your life and some money making ideas with the stock market and business…

Yours in abundance,

David Schirmer

I just thought that y’all might want to know this, in case you are interested in hanging with Schirmer on Facebook.

But the really big triumphant news in Schirmerville is that David Schirmer is part of a new book by Keith Leon, whom I’ve mentioned here before. The book is titled, Who Do You Think You Are?: Discover The Purpose Of Your Life. It’s a compendium of advice from 64-count-em-64 successful sorts, and even has a foreword by Jack "Chicken Soup" Canfield (who was, of course, also in The Secret. And The Opus.** And so on).

Naturally, Schirmer is involved in a spampaign to promote this book. [Subject line: "A great new book from my friend Keith Leon ... And I'm in it!"] Not only can Schirmer's inspiring story be found within its pages, but he’s also part of the big promo package. Yes, with the purchase of Who Do You Think You Are? you get a passel of goodies from numerous New-Wage gurus; these offerings are free, and probably worth every penny. Included in this happy line-up is an amazing 49-minute CD from…you guessed it!…David Schirmer. Here's the scoop:

Learn What Faith Is and How To Apply It To Get Everything You Desire by David Schirmer (Value: $97)

Without Faith, The Secret is nothing! With Faith, you will overcome the mountains of sickness, disease and poverty. Come on a journey with The Secret Teacher David Schirmer and find out why Faith is the most POWERFUL unseen force know to man. He will teach you what Faith is, how to develop and grow it, and most importantly how to use Faith to create abundance and prosperity in ALL areas your life. Get this amazing 49 minute CD and transcript valued at $97.

As for Keith Leon, he seems to be riding the "life purpose" wave with Oprah:

Even OPRAH knows that discovering your life purpose is a priority, so much so that she has been holding the largest web based seminars in history about this very subject. Oprah has been speaking with one man about this topic; Keith interviewed 64 mentors just for you!

Pretty exciting stuff, eh, Dear Ones?

Perhaps the most excited person of all is Keith Leon himself, who says his book is already changing lives:

…We've been bursting with excitement about the release of this book, which many believe has the power to change the world.

The editor of the book didn't even finish the first of six sections before her life changed forever.

Ten days before, she had just started a job that she wasn't passionate about. She took the job for the money. While editing the book, she received an idea that would change the way her new employer's company did business.

The next day she went into the office of her boss, told him her idea, how it would increase their profits and said that she was the one who should lead the project because she had the experience and the passion to do so.

Her boss agreed with her, and before she left his office that day, she had a new position in the company, had doubled her salary and set herself up for stock options so that when her idea takes off, she will reap the financial benefits.

Don’t you just love miracle stories like that? And as it turns out, Who Do You Think You Are? may very well be the last book you will ever have to read or buy, because...

By the time you finish reading Keith's book, you will know how to access the answers to all the questions you could ever think to ask.***

What’s really remarkable about Keith Leon is that he has so much compassion for the unenlightened:

We know that if you have read to the end of this letter you are quite likely to buy Keith's book and receive the bonus resources and gifts. We sadly think about the unfortunate few who will just go on with their day and not order the book now.

Think of me sadly, then, Keith, et al.

By the way, if you’re really ready to change your life for the better, or at least fix what’s ailing in your intimate relationship, Keith and his lovely wife Maura will give you their undivided attention on a Weekend With The Experts, for a mere $10,000.00 USD.

But I digress. You’re probably wondering what Keith Leon’s book reveals about David Schirmer. Well, you can be sure it doesn’t say a word about exposés on A Current Affair, nor about the rancorous split with Bob Proctor, nor about the intellectual properties actions, nor about the tons of angry investors, nor about any of the skeletons in the Schirmer family closet. Instead, in response to Leon’s question "What event or series of events lead [sic] to your discovery?", Schirmer begins with the standard "I-was-once-flat-broke" story. He explains how he and his brother were once successful manufacturers of a piece of farming equipment that they had invented. "Things were going extremely well," he writes, "until greed set in."

According to various sources, the truth of the matter – and the story you won’t read in Keith Leon’s book – is that the Schirmer brothers were merely working on the farm of the man who had actually invented and patented the machine. The brothers decided they could make money from the invention, so they left the farm to begin their own manufacturing company. They didn’t have the permission of the inventor, but he was a good Christian man and apparently not a litigious sort so he didn’t pursue it. Evidently the business folded when David Schirmer’s brother went to prison for a spell.

Schirmer goes on to tell his version of his amazing success story, wrapping it up thusly:

A friend loaned me some Bob Proctor cassette tapes of his seminar You Were Born Rich. As I listened, Bob explained to me how the mind works and why we get the results we have in our life. The reason I was drawn to his work was because Bob didn’t just tell me what to do, he also showed me how the mind works and told me why to do it. Within thirty days of listening to Bob and doing the things he said, things started to change. I went from broke to ten thousand dollars a month within 3 month, then over a million a year within three years.

Thus it was that Schirmer set his sights on Scientist Bob, and wormed his way into the man's good graces (or at least bought the rights to market some of Proctor's material). The two even did some workshops together. It was lovely while it lasted…

Schirmer concludes:

I became a very successful trader once I realized that the stock market is just a vibration, like everything else. Once you tune into the vibration and really notice the way the energy moves, you can see its patterns and cycles. All you really need to successfully trade is the right knowledge, a rule, a pencil and a half an hour a week.

This from the man whose broker, according to more than one source, refused to work with him any more because Schirmer lost so much money.

But you probably won’t read that in Keith Leon’s book or, for that matter, on any of David Schirmer’s web sites. Well, I suppose the variance in the stories is really no big deal. Perhaps Schirmer is only exercising his skills in "explaining complex subjects in the simplest way possible."

Be that as it may, it looks as if Mr. Fire, for better or for worse, and whether he likes it or not, has a new best friend.

PS added on April 25: I just revisited Keith Leon's Gaia Community profile. Formerly David Schirmer was the second name under his "My Heroes" listing. Schirmer seems to be missing from that list now, though Keith still gives him credit as one of his teachers.
PPS added on May 7: Here's your chance to subscribe to Succeed Magazine and save big! Remember, the next issue will feature Mr. Fire!

* I've been informed that Mr. Fitzgerald is one of Australia's most notorious spruikers. I confess to not having known much about him, or even to have heard of him until recently, but I do understand the "birds of a feather" concept...
**It's really too bad Schirmer apparently wasn't chosen to be in The Opus, since I understand the story is framed around the tale of a famous violinist, and as it happens, rumor has it that David Schirmer fiddles about...er.. plays the violin! The movie could have featured footage of him playing. Talk about a missed opportunity...
*** What if one of the questions turns out to be, "Why the hell did I waste my money on this crap?"?

On a would-be marriage, and a horse's ACCESS

Just a couple of updates before I return to my "day job"...

"What did the president know, and when did he know it?"
Boy, do I have egg on my face. I've been writing about what I perceived as the alliance between Joe "Mr. Fire" Vitale and David "Succeed Magazine" Schirmer. Well, it turns out that, according to Joe, there is no such alliance after all. On Joe's blog today I saw this comment, sent in response to Joe's post about making the cover of Succeed:
  1. Joe Kersey says

Congratulations, Joe! I expect we’ll be hearing a lot more out of your collaboration with David Schirmer. It’s obvious from his blog that he’s excited about it. The two of you should make a really powerful team!

    May 21st, 2008 | #

  2. Joe Vitale says

Hi Joe. I don’t know David and am not collaborating on anything with him, so not sure what you know that I don’t. Succeed magazine simply did a feature on me, which I’m grateful for. I didn’t even know he was associated with the magazine till after it was all said and done. Anyway, I apprecaite [sic] your words of congratulations. Succeed is a great and inspiring magazine. Richard Branson was on the last cover, so my being on the next one is beyond flattering. Now I want to receive as much wealth as Branson - or more.
    Blessings,
    joe :)

Oh, dear. So I guess there never really was a marriage in the first place. And I guess we are also to assume that Joe didn't know David Schirmer himself was listening in on the conversation when the editor of Succeed Magazine did the interview. Schirmer recently wrote on his own blog:

Wednesday, 23 April 2008

Opps!! [sic] I'd better write another blog.

Time flies so fast when you're having fun! I can hardly believe it is so long since I wrote my last blog. A friend on msn suggested today that I should post again ... so here I am.

There is much too much to write about to bring you up to date, so I'll share with you just a little of my day today.

At 7:30am the editor of our Succeed Magazine phoned Texas, USA. It was a special call to an amazing man, friend and co-presenter on The Secret, Dr Joe Vitale. I enjoyed immensely sitting in and listening to Joe's story.
Shame on Schirmer for eavesdropping without informing Joe he was doing so. And shame on him for claiming that Joe is a friend of his when Joe says he doesn't even know David.

I guess we can also assume that someone besides David Schirmer contacted Joe about being in/on Succeed Magazine in the first place – and being in/on it not once, but twice (an article of Joe's also appeared in the April-May issue). So maybe Succeed was being a little less than honest for not disclosing to Joe that David Schirmer was the publisher. But heck, it's "a great and inspiring magazine," according to Joe, so I guess a little duplicity is okay.

If we are to take Joe literally, Succeed merely featured him and that was that; no further affiliation. I imagine this means that if you click on the specific "Mr. Fire" link to subscribe to Succeed – the link that Joe helpfully published on his blog – Mr. Fire will not receive a percentage or anything like that.

So now you know. Just thought I'd pass the information along, in the interests of being fair and balanced here.

By the way, Succeed magazine also recently featured a profile of David Schirmer's ex joint-venture partner, noted quantum physics expert and "Law Of Attraction guru" Bob Proctor. So even though he can't market Proctor's stuff any more, by court order, Schirmer apparently can still exploit Proctor's name to sell his magazine.

Warning: ACCESSories on the loose
As if Australia didn't have enough on its mind, what with David Schirmer still running around loose, there is also this creepy cultish thing called ACCESS Energy Transformation, which seems more determined than ever to dig its claws in Down Under. I wrote about ACCESS here last year, and then did a follow-up post a few days later.

ACCESS, according to a tale that seems to be strangely absent from the current official ACCESS sites (but can be found here and here), was founded in the early 1990s. It all started when a "being of light" (or, alternatively, "beings of light") called Novian used the late Russian faux-monk/Whirled-class charlatan Grigori Rasputin to channel an "energy transformation technique" to a Santa Barbara, California realtor named Gary Douglas. Gary decided to call the technique ACCESS, and it now has followers all over the world. But he seems to be concentrating on the US, Australia, and New Zealand.
And what's really scary, in my view, is that Gary and gang want to ACCESSorize the younger generation with their ACCESS kids' camps.

Yesterday I heard from an anonymous commenter responding to my second ACCESS blog post. This person was concerned about the fact that Gary and the ACCESS teachings seem to encourage their followers to have sex with anyone they want to, even if they're married. That's not the first time I've heard this, and if it is true, it doesn't seem that ACCESS would be the best organization to be running a kids' camp. I'm just saying...

My correspondent also provided a link to an ABC MediaWatch page detailing a segment last year on Australia's Channel 7, featuring Gary Douglas himself. "Dr." Douglas appeared on a segment of Channel 7's The Morning Show as a "behavioural expert" sharing his views about kids with autism and ADD. The folks on the program later ended up apologizing (or apologising, for you Aussies and Brits) on the air for featuring this loony-tunes "doctor." Here's the link.

As the Media Watch writer noted, "Dr." Douglas doesn't restrict his "energy transformation" techniques to humans; he also works with horses. He even put together a TV pilot, Conscious Horse, Conscious Rider, about his remarkable equine communication skills.
Conscious Horse Conscious Rider is a remarkable TV Pilot, starring horse medium Gary Douglas, and created at the request of horses everywhere.
So not only is Gary Douglas a doctor who's an expert on kids with autism and ADD; he's also a horse's... a horse whisperer. And the horses themselves requested that he make his TV show. Take that, all you neigh-sayers!

It's a mad, mad Whirled, and I'd love to stay and chat, Dear Ones... but I gotta get back to work for a while. And then I think I'm going to go out and talk to the horses. I'll let you know what they have to say.

PS ~ It's not that I think there is no validity to "horse whispering." I do. People such as Monty Roberts and Pat and Linda Parelli have achieved remarkable results with horses, and I am endlessly fascinated with their work. But they utilize knowledge about equine behavior and body language, not telepathy or the voices in their heads or whatever it is that Gary Douglas claims to use.

More on Squirmer...er...Schirmer

Things are not going well for David Schirmer, the lone Aussie star of the hit New-Wage infomercial The Secret.

Just a little over a month ago, he posted this gleeful message on The Secret discussion forum:
Re: What made you smile today? When a well meaning, high profile psychologist on a radio interview said today that the Secert [sic] is dangerous and doesn't work ... and what professional qualifactions [sic] do I have to back up my claims! I calmly replied that I have a degree in results ... and the "By your fruits you are known!" I had to smile as I looked out from my window of my office at home across the estate to the city, as he [the psychologist] was stuck in traffic driving his basic car home from the job he goes to every day!!!!
Posted by David Schirmer 05/24/07 07:18 AM
What a difference a month makes. Very shortly after that message was posted, the Australian tabloid news show A Current Affair (ACA) aired the first of several segments on Schirmer and the allegations that he bilked numerous investors. I've commented on this matter several times on this blog.

And now ACA has done it again. Here's a link to a follow-up on Schirmer that was aired Monday evening (Aussie time). As always, Firefox users and most Mac users may have trouble following this link. But if you're using Internet Explorer, go for it!

Here's the YouTube link.

In this segment we see Schirmer apparently breaking a promise he'd previously made to ACA reporter Ben Fordham. Schirmer had originally invited Fordham to be a VIP attendee at a get-rich-quick seminar in Melbourne that Schirmer was putting on with fellow Secret star Bob Proctor (who now looks as if he rues the day he ever teamed up with Schirmer). Schirmer promised Fordham, on-camera, that he could bring cameras and everything to the seminar. I guess he changed his mind. Not only was Fordham turned away from the seminar by security guards, but when he caught up with Schirmer in a restaurant and tried to get an interview, Schirmer apparently attempted to destroy the videotape.

The other side?
Recently I received an email from a person who, though not a close friend of Schirmer, says that Schirmer helped some of this person's family members. This is the same individual who previously had asked me to remove the PhotoShopped images of Schirmer from my blog (I blogged about that, of course). I did not remove the images but, in the interests of fairness – at least as "fair" as I get on this admittedly biased forum – I thought that it would be a good idea for me to print "another side" of the story. So I sought and was given permission to share this email.

Dear Ms Schmidt
I appreciate your acknowledgment on your website of my earlier correspondence with you regarding the images of David Schirmer on your above website. My email was not a "heartfelt plea" but a respectful request - it was worth a go, as any Aussie will tell you. I noted on your website that you chose to ask others for their views, obviously of more value to you than anything I could say to you, and that has to be ok, though I found some of their language objectionable, but that unfortunately is the way of the world these days, and they do not know me, and it is their democratic right, and I will defend that. You are right that young children should not be accessing blogs such as yours, and they probably haven't, truth be known. The concern for human damage is genuine but that is certainly hard to communicate in print and it is hard to change any views that are already ingrained.

I must say I was surprised with one of your friend's views "I am appalled at the tactic that this fellow took. His plea to remove the images "FOR THE CHILDREN" is ghastly, abhorrent". As I said, there was no "plea" just a request. I'm not sure what the "blame shifting" is all about and neither am I claiming that you caused the children's distress. If David Schirmer is a "liar and crook" - let it be proved by the correct channels, not by the remote public at large and manipulative media. I'm not sure what my "tactic" was supposed to be. I have nothing but sadness at how quickly someone can be demolished.

The one thing I appreciate about your comments is that, should the story not prove to be correct, then you will print retractions and apologies. Thank you.

I also hope the people who complained get their money back, if indeed they are owed money. I will keep an open mind on this one and not point fingers such as has been done until I know the truth. I am not a close friend, but the Schirmers have given close members of my family opportunities they otherwise would not have had and that in itself deserves my loyalty, and no money involved, just a new lease of life! I come at this from a different angle than you or your friends do.

Thank you for your time. Even "alleged scammers" do good things.
In my reply to this person I remarked that good deeds do not necessarily cancel out bad deeds – but I noted that the reverse is true as well. And I acknowledged that there are sometimes shades of gray.

In no way is this intended to dismiss the complaints of the people who claim to have been victims of Schirmer's broken promises. I have heard from some of them privately, and it seems to me that for them, there are no "shades of gray." But I did want to let y'all know that I have been hearing from a Schirmer defender who, even though I've been pretty mean and catty on this blog, has remained civil. If only everyone on the Internet could maintain this level of civility...

In any case, I sincerely hope that this all works out well for everyone. Right now, however, it's not looking too good for David Schirmer.

The Mini-Madoff of Melbourne?

I'm the only Aussie on The Secret DVD, and probably the most controversial, most fun loving, most challenging and direct, maybe the richest?

~ David Schirmer's self-description on his Twitter page

It's been a while since I blogged about Australian Secret star David Schirmer, The Blunder from Down Under...or perhaps we should give him a new nickname for the new year. How about the Mini-Madoff of Melbourne? Like the infamous Bernie M., David Schirmer allegedly "made off" with large amounts of other people's money, as documented in numerous segments of the Aussie tabloid TV program, A Current Affair. Thus far, of course, David's reported misdeeds have been on a considerably smaller scale than those of Bernie Madoff – as have the transgressions of the "Mini-Madoffs" in the US – and his shenanigans have been largely confined to Australia. Still, the comparison seems apt. Besides, I rather like the alliteration.

From what I can see, however, Melbourne's Mini-M continues to deny any real wrongdoing – it seems the most he'll ever admit to is having made some mistakes in the past ("And who hasn't made mistakes?" is the implied question) – and he just keeps on keeping on. If you don't care, maybe you should, because he is still has his eyes on America. More on that in a moment.

He continues to trade on his association with the most famous New-Wage moviemercial of our times, The Secret, branding himself as "The 'Car Park' Guy," due to his spiel on the DVD about using the Law Of Attraction to attract prime parking spaces. As he said in the movie:

"People are amazed how I line up car parks. And I've done this right from when I first understood the secret. I would visualise a car space exactly where I wanted it and 95% of the time it would be there for me and I'd just pull straight in. Five percent of the time I'd have to wait just a minute or two and the person would pull out and I'd pull in. So I do that all the time."

Of course, he could just as easily brand himself as "The 'Checks In The Mail' Guy In The Secret":

"When I first understood the secret, I was getting bills. Every day I would get a bunch of bills in the mail and I thought, This is, how do I turn this around? The law of attraction states that what you focus on you will get. So I got a bank statement and I whited out the total and I put a new total in there. I put exactly how much I wanted to see in the bank. I thought, what if I just visualise cheques coming in the mail, so I just visualised a bunch of cheques coming in the mail. Within just one month, things started to change. And it's just amazing, today I just get cheques in the mail. I get a fewbills, but I get more cheques than bills."

The above two quotations were taken from a PDF that includes a transcript of the original DVD of The Secret (yes, this is the version with Esther Hicks and her imaginary pal Abe).

I know that some of this stuff is old news, but that's for the benefit of those who have only recently joined the party here and don't have all of the background information. The rest of you can feel free to skip over the stuff you already know.

The webmaster for David's The Secret Revealed web site seems to have worked overtime on search engine optimization, or at least I guess that's what it is (I'm kind of a Web marketing 'tard). Just click on the "Site Map" link on the home page and you'll see what I mean. There are more than 70 links, each one leading to a long list of yet more links, inclusive of all of the New-Wage gurus and concepts covered in The Secret, and then some. Thus, someone who is looking for, say, information on Joe Vitale might very well be led to David Schirmer's site. But I suppose that's pretty much in keeping with the general practices in the New-Wage industry, which is one large mutual masturb...er..big party, where the hustlers use each other's names all the time to promote their own stuff.

Even as he exploits his Secret connection, David continues to try to set himself apart from other Secret stars and the rest of the New-Wage scene – not just by describing himself in superlatives, as in that Twitter quotation above, but also by branding himself as a Bible-believing, saved-by-Jesus Christian, as snarkily reported here previously. (Some people are still trying to figure out the significance of the kitten pictures on that post I linked to. So far no one has guessed correctly.)

For some time now, David's purported Christianity has been finding its expression through his ongoing involvement in a prosperity-oriented church called Rhema Melbourne (formerly Word Family Church), an institution that seems to be rooted in the belief that God wants "His" people to be prosperous, and that "He" also wants them to fork over as much money as possible to the church that nurtures this holy sense of entitlement.

A friend of mine refers to churches like this as The Church of the Deluded, and it seems appropriate here. Either Rhema Melbourne doesn't know about Schirmer's bad press, or they don't care, or they recognize a good hustler...er...fundraiser... when they see one, and they figure he can help fill the collection plates. Of course, there's always the possibility that the church is simply practicing Christian forgiveness, as Our Lord would wish. On the other hand, maybe the Aussie authorities would be interested in the dealings of the Rhema Melbourne Church. That's not up to me to decide.

In any case, David Schirmer currently seems to be one of his church's rock stars, and they have him teaching a series of prosperity classes to the faithful. The promo page on Rhema's web site says, "Your [sic] would normally have to pay thousands to hear David share his business insights and secrets … you get to enjoy monthly seminars with him for free." In one of the upcoming classes, he will talk about the importance of tithing. "Learn why every business person should tithe and how to multiply your profits through offerings," says the blurb for his Purpose of Prosperity class, scheduled for February 22.

While I'm sure his church is just tickled pink about that, I have a feeling that some of this is not setting too well with the folks to whom he still allegedly owes all of that money. I remember hearing David promise A Current Affair's Ben Fordham that he would have all of the money paid back to his earlier investors by Christmas – of 2007. From what I have heard, he has yet to keep that promise. As an anonymous correspondent put it recently, "Where the hell is everyone's money that he owes them, in the bloody church coffers now? Won’t that make people happy. David Schirmer owes so many people so much money it is not funny and he talks about this sort of stuff. You’ve got to give it to him, the guy has gall."

David and his lovely wife Lorna are also still involved with a motivational project for youngsters, Youth Destiny Camp, which I first mentioned here last year. Among other things, he recently taught a group of young kids how to create a company and turn $500 into $500,000 in 90 days. "God help the poor little suckers when he has not even done that himself!" someone commented to me recently. Word has it that most of the kids who went to the Schirmers' Youth Camp last year did not return this year (perhaps they were so successful they didn't need to), and there was only a fraction of last year's turnout, some of whom were family. In any case, David has put a joyful spin on it as usual:

It is absolutely amazing to watch the young adults (12-19) change over the 5 days. Many come very shy and reserved and not really knowing what to expect; they leave full of confidence with a Vision Board in their hand and a new destiny. The 5-day YDC is often the best time in their lives.

And here's a link to a very short video showing some of the fun and games at the 2009 YDC. By the way, the cost per kiddo is $995 in Aussie dollars, which is about $650 in US dollars.

In addition to all of the above, David continues to promote himself as a stock market expert and wealth advisor, and is also still involved in business and success mentoring, selling products such as his Wealth Building 101 Course, another item I have mentioned here before. This is the course where he teaches business owners how to protect their assets against "predator-plaintiffs and their attorneys." (His main wealth tip: Don't own anything in your name.) I'll give him this: He does have experience with plaintiffs and their attorneys, having been sued numerous times himself.

No doubt David has faced a few disappointments, in addition to that split-up with Bob Proctor last year (speaking of lawsuits). For one thing, he doesn't seem to be on the A-list for the scads of New-Wage moviemercials that have come out since The Secret (e.g., The Opus, The Compass, The Rumpus, The Leap, The Creep, Awakeners, that dumb movie where people keep tapping on themselves, or any of a number of Beyond-The-Secret type offerings). Sadder still, he isn't included in the latest incarnation of the great hustledork affiliate scheme, The Masters Gathering. I get the feeling that he's still pretty much persona non grata among the stars and superstars of the New-Wage industry.

Disappointments aside, he still seems to be having a barrel of fun online. Even if the New-Wage superstars will have little to do with him, there are hundreds upon hundreds of naive superstar-wannabes and groupies, some of whom have money to blow. And even if they don't have money, they are possessed of a certain naivete and willingness to glom onto anyone who can talk a good game, particularly if that person was in...gasp!...The Secret. Perhaps they think that since this charming guy with the Aussie accent and the twinkle in his eye has made himself more accessible than some of the other Secret stars, he might be able to get them into The Club. They don't seem to be aware that Schirmer himself can't really get into The Club, at least not into the V.I.P. room.

In any case, he has jumped into social media big time. He's been on Facebook and Myspace for quite some time now, but these days he is also having a fine old time on Twitter as well. To begin with, it's yet another forum for him to share insights about the stock market. Consider this bit of timeless wisdom:

Do you know why the stock market is called an "Exchange"? Because it is where the ignorant exchange their money for experience!!

He said a mouthful, perhaps without realizing it. One gets the feeling that he is banking on a never-ending flow of "the ignorant" to his workshops and web sites. On a later Tweet, he wrote a variation of the same thought:

When person with money meets person with experience; Person with money will get the experience and person with experience will get the money.
Yep, I'd say that about sums it up. Let this be a warning to any inexperienced but moneyed souls who come in contact with David Schirmer. The "experience" you receive in exchange for giving him your money may not be quite what you had in mind.

He has also been Tweeting in vaguely flirtatious ways with various ladies about topics such as sex and romance and passion for one's vision; some are Tweeting coquettishly right back, as if they don't know, or simply don't care, about the negative press he's received (see that bit above, about The Club). And he's merrily exchanging Tweets with other spruikers (I had to throw a fine Aussie slang term in here somewhere), such as online entrepreneur Benjamin Bressington, whose Twitter handle is mongrelstyle. Recently David wrote:

Grown 67 followers since Tuesday evening ... is that OK?

Benjamin replied:

is that all.... do those people understand you [sic] skills.

Benjamin went on to Tweet sweetly to David about how he, Benjamin, should have followed David's previous stock market prediction reports instead of doubting, but he has now learned his lesson and is looking forward to reading David's 2009 predictions. And in case you're curious, here's another link to the dynamic Benjamin, looking for all the world like actor Jason Alexander, except younger and with more hair.

Well, something must be working in Benjamin's life, because it looks as if he is shopping for a Rolls-Royce. He recently wrote:

I sat in a New Rolls Royce Coupe today, it is amazing almost made me cry it is an amazing car the roof has stars that light up AWESOME.

Later David Tweeted:

@mongelstyle [sic] CONGRATULATIONS ... hear you put your order in for your new Rolls Royce. Can't wait for a ride ... in the back seat!

Those of you who were thinking, "How about in the trunk?" should just stop that kind of thinking right now. I will not tolerate violence on this blog. My first thought was that if Benjamin's Rolls deal falls through, maybe Mr. Fire will let David ride in his Rolls for five thousand US dollars – or $7,500.00, if David wants to be the sole "Phantom rider."

David may not have a Rolls of his own yet, but he still seems to be doing all right, car-wise; he's driving a BMW M5 (base price of current models is around $185,00 USD). Although he has a way to go before he has as many cars as Mr. Fire, he does seem to be trying to play in that league, or trying to get into The Club, as it were. Kissing-up on Twitter is one of his strategies, evidenced by a couple of comments he wrote in response to Tweets regarding Joe's recent $12,500 Awakened Millionaire Weekend, which took place in Austin on January 23-25 (yes, it fell during Cosmic Connie Day). In response to one of Joe's Tweets about the event, David wrote:

@mrfire Well done Joe! What this about a bad economy in the US? Keep changing the world.

Later David "re-Tweeted" one of Joe's Tweets:

RT: @mrfire: Offered $100,000 Platinum Package at end of Awakened Millionaire Training, people rushed to sign up. An inspired, awakened idea.

Alas, Joe has yet to publicly acknowledge David's Twittery overtures. Maybe it is simply because he never saw them. Still, he doesn't hesitate to cite Schirmer's now-failed Succeed Magazine in his promo material. This blurb is currently on the home page of his main website, mrfire.com:

According to Succeed Magazine, Dr. Joe Vitale is one of the five top marketing specialists in the world today and is known to his readers, customers, and seminar attendees as the world's first hypnotic writer.

Though Succeed seems to be on hiatus indefinitely, there is apparently another magazine in the works at Schirmerville:

We are looking for successful people with an inspirational story for the global launch of our magazine. huge exposure. Please Retweet.

I don't know yet whether this is a whole new publication (perhaps in the Chicken-Soup-type inspirational genre) or just another incarnation of Succeed, created to appease the poor saps who paid the hefty price for subscriptions. Either way, I'm sure the world is waiting breathlessly for yet another slick New-Wage rag.

Judging from another recent Tweet, David is also considering either buying or renting a private jet, or at least trying to make people think he is rich enough to consider it:

@getsmartwithjohn Of course I can afford it ... God has blessed me with incredible abundance. I prefer the new Gulfstream 650.

Though I can't find the comment to which that Tweet was apparently a response, and the @getsmartwithjohn Twitter page doesn't seem to exist, there is an @getsmartwithjon Twitter page, as well as a "Get Smart With John" web site at http://www.getsmartwithjohn.com/. The man behind those sites is Aussie John Armitage-Smart. A bit of Googling revealed that among other things, John is a distributor for Neways International, a company that has its own "interesting" history. I'm guessing this is the same John Smart that the aforementioned Benjamin Bressington mentioned in a January 22 Tweet:

Just sitting in david schirmer's office with john smart in melbourne, and it is actually a nice day in melbourne

Here's a picture of John Smart (and I do believe that is Benjamin B in the background).

Twitter seems to be a whole new world for David Schirmer, an over-the-rainbow realm where all of his old troubles have melted like lemon drops. His self-description on his Twitter profile – which I quoted above, but it's so good I'll give it to you again – shows that his gift for spin is still alive and well:

I'm the only Aussie on The Secret DVD, and probably the most controversial, most fun loving, most challenging and direct, maybe the richest?

Uh-huh. The "most controversial" part is true, at least, if by that he means "most sued." "Fun loving?" Well, let's not get into that; let's just say the rumors have been flying for some time now. "Challenging and direct?" Okay, I'll give him that; I bet he has challenged every legal action that's ever been taken against him, and he also seems to be challenging the Aussie authorities to "catch me if you can." And "the richest?" Not to belabor the point, but if he really is the richest, you think he'd have some money left over, after spending it on necessities such as expensive cars and private jets, to pay back at least some of those people...

Now, I'm just speculating here, but to me David Schirmer's boasts seem less like an accurate reflection of his life, and more like a lonely teenage boy bragging to his friends about the hot date he had last Saturday night, when in reality his "date" consisted of his right hand and a pilfered copy of Dad's Playboy magazine (or an unsupervised surfing session on the Internet). The difference is that the teenage boy isn't bilking people out of their life savings.

As for being the only Aussie on The Secret, even that is arguable, of course, if you include creator and producer Rhonda Byrne, whose personal story is told in the movie and the book. It turns out that several other Aussies were originally interviewed as well, but didn't make the final cut. (I often wonder if Rhonda has since had any regrets about the Aussie who was chosen.) One of the originally interviewed Aussies is Sydney's Lynda Dyer, who, as it happens, did make the aforementioned Masters Gathering.

Aussie or not, David Schirmer obviously wants to share his gifts with the world. Canada may be the first baby step; the Schirmers already have two sons in Canada. With two of the spawn in the Great White North, could the parents be far behind? O Canada, don't say you've not been warned! (Hmmm...I feel a song coming on...)

The US needs to be on the alert as well. David recently Tweeted to online entrepreneur Ali Brown, owner of "a multimillion dollar company devoted to empowering women around the world with the tools to live the freedom-based lives of their dreams":

@alibrownla Hi Ali, Where will you be Feb 23-Mar 10? I'll be in the States and would love to catch up.

I imagine he would love to "catch up" to Ali, for several reasons, but I am pretty sure she's too smart for that. Nonetheless, David seems to be headed our way, as indicated by a recent Tweet:

Had a great meeting with John & Ben regarding our launch in the States ... Be there soon!!

I'm guessing that the "Ben" he mentioned is not Ben Fordham of A Current Affair. More than likely it's Ben "I sat in a Rolls!" Bressington. In fact I could just about guarantee that's the Ben he's talking about, as indicated by this entry on Ben's blog, "Catalst [sic] For Transformation," and on his Twitter page:

David Schirmer has told me the train is leaving on his new business, I am excited...I am on the train.

As for who John is, I'm guessing it's the aforementioned John Armitage-Smart. One wag suggested that "John Arguably-Smart" would be a more appropriate name, seeing as how the guy is poised to launch a new business with David Schirmer.

You almost have to feel sorry for Ben and John, but then again, they're just as capable as anyone else of Googling, or of researching just by asking around. After all, it seems that David Schirmer has a long history of convincing people that he has more than he actually has. Many have wound up disillusioned or worse, and some have gone public. (Does the name "Warren Henningsen" ring a bell? Warren was once David's greatest champion, even "protecting" him from a TV reporter when David took refuge in a public restroom. But finally even Warren had enough.)

Perhaps David is simply practicing that "act as if" routine that so many Law Of Attraction fans embrace, talking his situation up as if he's already received whatever it is he wants, even though he can't even afford the deposit. Over the years he has apparently been successful in convincing numerous other folks to buy into his schemes, and that's what keeps him going till the scheme du jour falls through, and then it's on to the next one. Of course, as I've noted numerous times on this blog, he's far from the only hustler who does this sort of thing. But that doesn't excuse any of his wrongdoings.

For now, it seems there's no getting around it: the Mini-Madoff of Melbourne is heading our way, seeking new opportunities in the land of bilk and money. Are Americans too smart for him? Don't count on it. This, after all, is the place where Bernie Madoff and untold numbers of lesser grifters could squeeze billions out of the nation's very richest (I mean, Steven Spielberg! C'mon!). This is the land where even notorious serial scammers like Kevin Trudeau can still make an obscenely good living by packaging hope and magical thinking for the desperate masses, while playing the hero/martyr role whenever they have a run-in with the law.

Really, David Schirmer will fit right in (he even has a head start on the martyrdom bit).

And who knows, he may even make the Masters Gathering project yet. If he's really lucky and keeps kissing up, maybe Mr. Fire will even start returning his Tweets. And if he can just put enough time and physical distance between himself and his troubles Down Under, he may yet be able to get into the V.I.P. room of The Club.

Lord help us all.

PS added February 7: I just received an anonymous disapproving comment today, but even though the person sent the comment as a response to a post I wrote back in November about the presidential election, I think s/he really intended to respond to this post. Rather than republishing the comment up here, I am simply going to link to it. Here's the link. So, Anon, you don't need to tell your friends that Cosmic Connie doesn't have the courage to publish your comment. I published it to the post to which you sent it.

How to ruin a perfectly good friendship in a few easy Tweets:
1. Be a personal trainer for a successful New-Wage hustledork.
2. Exploit the heck out of that association by mentioning it on all of your social networking sites, including Twitter, and by making poor-quality videos with candid shots of the hustledork in your home.
3. Initiate a Twitter exchange with a notorious spruiker who is trying to get into The Club to which your hustledork friend belongs (and to which you are trying to gain membership yourself):

Trainer: @davidschirmer Hi David! Loved your bit in The Secret. I am good friends with Jack. Loving your tweets!!!
http://twitter.com/MarvinTowler/status/1191189466

Spruiker: @MarvinTowler Thanks for your tweet. How close are you to Jack? I would love to catch up with him sometime, we met in Toronto 2 years ago
http://twitter.com/davidschirmer/status/1193786983

Trainer: @davidschirmer Really close. I can get you in touch with him if you'd like?
http://twitter.com/MarvinTowler/status/1198329420

Spruiker: @MarvinTowler Hi Marvin, that would be great, especially if we could make contact for my upcoming US trip.

4. Wonder why the hustledork has mysteriously canceled his training sessions with you and won't return your phone calls.

Marvin, Marvin... friends don't let friends get involved with... oh, well, let's just sit back and see how this plays out. But don't say I didn't warn you, Marvin.
